Code of Conduct

Sydney University Graduate Choir

Purpose

This Code of Conduct sets out the Sydney University Graduate Choir’s (SUGC) expectations for behaviour that fosters a respectful, inclusive and enjoyable environment for all members, volunteers and guests. Our purpose is simple: to share the joy of singing together.

Scope

This Code applies to all SUGC members, volunteers, contractors and guests — whether at rehearsals, performances, social events, or online in any SUGC-branded space.

Key Principles

1. Dignity and Respect

Every person connected with SUGC deserves to be treated with dignity and respect, regardless of their role, background, age, gender, ability, race, religion, or personal characteristics. We expect all members to:

  • Behave courteously and professionally toward fellow members, audiences, donors, s and generally all persons members come in contact with.
  • Use inclusive, considerate language — both in person and online.
  • Respect personal boundaries and differing opinions.

2. Inclusive and Supportive Community

SUGC is a volunteer community enriched by people of different ages, backgrounds and perspectives. We are committed to ensuring everyone can contribute freely and confidently. This means:

  • Welcoming new members warmly and supporting their participation.
  • Valuing diversity of thought and experience.
  • Ensuring no one is excluded, dismissed, or marginalised.

3. Zero Tolerance for Harassment and Bullying

Harassment, bullying, discrimination and offensive behaviour — whether verbal, physical, or digital — will not be tolerated. Unacceptable conduct includes:

  • Unwelcome physical contact, intimidation, or intrusion into personal space.
  • Derogatory comments or jokes targeting gender, race, age, religion, ability, or any other personal characteristic.
  • Belittling, mocking, or shaming individuals or the choir.
  • Spreading rumours or gossip that harms the choir’s reputation or any individual.
  • Ignoring or excluding members based on personal attributes.

4. Rehearsal and Performance Etiquette

Out of respect for our conductor, fellow singers and audiences, members should:

  • Arrive on time and prepared for rehearsals and performances.
  • Avoid talking or creating distractions during rehearsals.
  • Follow dress and performance guidelines as communicated for each event.
  • Cooperate with reasonable directions from the conductor and committee.
  • Silence and stow mobile phones during rehearsals and performances.
  • Not photograph or record fellow members or guests without their consent; members consent to being photographed or recorded by SUGC’s authorised social media team is a condition of membership.
  • Comply with requirements, including notices and directions, of performance spaces, such as e.g. “No Entry” signs.
  • Maintain the same standards of respect and conduct at SUGC social events as at rehearsals and performances.

5. Acting as an Ambassador for SUGC

Members represent SUGC whenever they act in association with the choir. You should:

  • Obtain specific authorisation before speaking publicly on behalf of SUGC.
  • Refrain from using your SUGC affiliation to advance personal or commercial interests.
  • Be mindful that personal social media posts about SUGC reflect on the choir, even when posted from personal accounts.
  • Represent the choir with pride, warmth and good spirit.

Raising Concerns

Anyone who witnesses or experiences behaviour that breaches this Code is encouraged to speak up. Reports will be treated with confidentiality and handled promptly. The formal process for complaints, disciplinary action and member rights of appeal is set out in Articles 11 and 12 of the SUGC Articles of Association.

  • General concerns: Raise with the SUGC President in the first instance.
  • If the matter concerns the President: Contact another member of the SUGC Committee.
  • Urgent matters: Speak directly to the conductor or a committee member at the event.

Consequences

Breaches of this Code will be addressed appropriately, taking into account the nature and severity of the conduct. Outcomes may include a conversation, a formal warning or, in serious cases, suspension or termination of membership.

Review

This Code will be reviewed regularly by the SUGC Committee. Feedback is welcome.
