Bel Canto Award 2012– Success for Emma Moore

The final of he Richard Bonynge and Joan Sutherland Bel Canto Award  for 2012 was held in the Verbrugghen Hall of the Sydney Conservatorium on 7 October. Adjudicators were Richard Bonynge, Joan Carden, Bernadette Cullen and Rosemary Gunn.

Six singers competed in the final, including Emma Moore (soprano), the winner of the Joan Carden Award in 2011, who sang the role of Michal in our performance that year of Handel’s Saul. Emma was awarded the second prize for outstanding performances of the arias, “Regnava nel silenzio”, from Donizetti’s Lucia di Lammermoor, and “Ach ich liebte”, from Mozart’s Abduction from the Seraglio.

The winner was Samoan tenor, Darren Pene Pati,whose performance of the “Flower Song” from Bizet’s Carmen indicated that he would be an excellent artist to sing as soloist with the Choir at an early date. Awards were presented by Her Excellency Professor Marie Bashir.

Emma will shortly be returning to Germany after taking a few weeks break from her studies in Berlin, where she is on a full German Government scholarship for her Masters course in Opera at the University of the Arts.

On Wednesday, 10 October at 7.00 pm, the semi-finals of the Australian Singing Competition will be held at the Independent Theatre in North Sydney.  Three singers with associations with the Choir will be competing:

  • Amy Corkery (soprano), singled out for encouragement in the auditions for the Joan Carden Award 2012, and soloist in Haydn’s Die Jahreszeiten in August 2009, and Handel’s Saul in August 2010. Amy will be soloist in our forthcoming performance of Ein Deutsches Requiem by Brahms;
  • Anna Dowsley (mezzosoprano), who was also singled out for encouragement  in the Joan Carden Award earlier this year, and will be awarded a solo engagement with the Choir at an early date; and
  • Alexander Knight (baritone), who was a soloist in Saul, and sang the title role in Mendelssohn’s Paulus, in our Jubilee concert in May this year. He will also be singing the bass lead for us at Sydney Sings Messiah in the Town Hall in November.
